On May 21st, the SF Giants were pleased to honor San Leandro High School’s senior, Derek Wong. Derek has been involved with Students In Action for the past 4 years. Currently the SIA secretary, our honoree was first inspired to be involved in public service when he visited Vietnam a few years ago. While there, Derek volunteered to work in a pharmacy, packaging and delivering prescriptions. His experience in Vietnam helped Derek understand how important volunteering is. Derek credits SIA’s leadership training program with giving him the tools and confidence to create positive change within his community.

Currently, Derek works with the elderly and youth via the San Leandro Library reading programs. This year, Derek’s volunteerism has expanded to several different areas. He has:

• helped his SIA team to organize an ATTACK ALS event for the ALS CURE PROJECT

• helped to raise over $5000 for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America

• has been instrumental in getting 75% of his school to participate in putting together 100 care packages for the homeless and delivering them to 3 encampments in the Oakland Area

Recently Derek was honored by the Alameda County Transportation Commission with a Platinum Sneaker Award for helping San Leandro High School participate in the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools Golden Sneaker Contest. The Golden Sneaker Contest encourages students and families active and healthy ways to get to school. Derek won the award by encouraging his school community to bike, bus or carpool to school. Using his leadership skills, Derek promoted alternative transportation by bringing Cocoa for Carpools and the Bike Mobile to campus. In addition to spending a lot of time volunteering, Derek also has been playing tennis on the San Leandro High School varsity tennis team for the past 3 years. Our exceptional honoree is an exceptional student as well! Derek speaks three languages and has been accepted into 6 colleges in the fall. For tirelessly volunteering his time to bring awareness and make a positive change in his community, the SF Giants were pleased to celebrate Derek Wong at the Home Plate Ceremony.
